1719) In Judges 9, we have the Israelites making the choice to crown a king based on many things other than God’s will. Because of this, Jotham told the people a parable about several trees that wanted to choose another tree to be their leader.
First, they asked for an olive tree. This tree declined. Then they asked a fig tree to be their leader. This tree declined. Next, they asked a grapevine, and the vine said no. Then the trees asked brambles to be their leader and it said yes. Because of this, Jotham said the people will reap the results.
If choosing the brambles was a good choice, they would have a safe refuge. If choosing the brambles is a terrible choice, they will burn up.
I think this little parable reminds us we need to consider seriously whom we promote for any position of authority. And remember, to not consider and act on any of these positions means you have made a choice; a choice to do nothing. One that reaps its own consequences.
