1684) A broken heart is hard to experience, but it’s also difficult to see ones you care about go through this. The problem of pain in this life is difficult to deal with and think through. C.S. Lewis even dedicated an entire book to the subject he struggled so much with. We can spend our time wrestling with this but the reality is, there is pain in this life.
What do you do when the pain is so big, you feel you’re dying on the inside? Or what do you do when someone you love is in this same place? Accepting you cannot make the pain go away is the first big step, and then you can find the next one in Psalm 34:18.
Here, the psalmist reveals God is close to the brokenhearted. Notice it does not say God takes away the pain. What does he do? He sits closely to the one in pain; Why does this help? It’s because it communicates to the sufferer that they are not alone; they are not going through their heartbreak by themselves.
The next time a loved one is suffering, try sitting with the person, saying nothing. This support has a vital role in the healing.
