1512) As a teacher, I have always rooted for the underdogs; the students who seemed to have nothing going for them and those who were overlooked by the “in” crowd. These kids were in my line of vision because I can see and recognize the pain in their faces.

Through the 38 years I have been teaching, I can still see fragments of memories when the underdog ached. There was the time I was playing a review game with my students and one team named themselves the buck-toothed gang while pointing to an unfortunate boy on the other team. The horror and pain on that boy’s face is still so clear. I rarely become angry, but that day, it was easy to spot.

How does God see the underdog? Psalm 9:7-8 tells us God is ruling from his throne; that he will rule in justice. Then verse 9 pops up. This verse tells us God shelters the oppressed or those who are the underdogs. He sees and acts. Putting the three verses together, we get the context of what David was writing. God is the judge and he will take care of the underdog. I think it is safe to say God’s judgement will be doled out to those who oppress the underdogs of this world.

The good news is for those who feel less-than; that you just don’t measure up to anyone in our world: God sees and will shelter you. The bad news is for those who harass, bully, or mistreat the underdogs. Watch out! God sees.

It’s amazing to me that the almighty, all-knowing God cares about the least of us.
