Who is Jesus?

1432) People have asked Christians who Jesus is. How do you adequately answer this? Authors have written numerous books on this subject, but sometimes less is better. Jesus tells us exactly who he is in John 14:6. I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the father but by me. Let’s examine Jesus’ words a little closer and see if we can find a fresh perspective on a familiar verse.

First, when Jesus said he is the “Way,” the Greek word used here is hodos, meaning a pathway, and in this context, this pathway leads to God and is the only way to him.

The word “Truth” takes a beating these days. Many often suggest subtly or even directly that there is no such thing as universal, absolute truth. What’s true for you may not be true for me, etc. When Jesus said he was the Truth, he meant truth in totality. He is the spoken truth, the truth of ideas, and the divine truth. What he says is the truth.

Last, Jesus said he is the “Life.” This aspect of Jesus should be easy to digest. Jesus is the life-giver. Genesis 1 tells us over and over that God said, “Let there be…” Jesus is the one who encompasses the word of God. (John 1:1) So Jesus is the source of life at the beginning of the world and mankind. Jesus also gives us eternal life. (John 3:16).

Jesus is the way to God, the embodiment of truth and the life giver. Next time someone asks who Jesus is, here’s your answer!
