1238) I have been contemplating the 10 Commandments recently and the second commandment, (Exodus 20:4-6); you know, the one about not making any images to be worshipped has stuck in my mind. I’ve always just kind of skimmed through this commandment because making images to worship is not something I do, but as I have contemplated this, a new thought has come to me.
I have considered the fact that anytime we put something other than God as most important in our lives; we have broken this commandment, but what I had not thought about is that we can limit God and assume he is like us on multiple levels. This, too, is breaking this commandment.
For example, I have thought God must be really irritated with me when I have continually done something I know to be wrong. This is making a god other than the one who is patient and the fullness of love. I can also assume God doesn’t want to listen to my whining when the Bible teaches us God longs to hear from us, no matter what our motivations are.
These two examples are ways that, as humans, we make God like us, a type of idolatry. Assigning to God the characteristics of humans breaks this commandment just as much as if we make an idol and worship it.
