Say What?

1175) There are old sayings out there that many of us have heard throughout our lifetime. Some of them include sage advice, but there are others we have just accepted but either aren’t true or contradict what we know to be true.

For example, there’s a quote that is not found in the Bible but is often credited to it. “God helps those who help themselves.” This is commonly stated but, in reality, is not biblical. God helps those of us who ask for his help. Can he give aid when we ask? Of course. Other than that, this saying doesn’t hold water.

Another common saying I believe is detrimental, and that is, “Forgive and forget.” I think the message has some validity. It is always good to forgive and “forget” the idea of getting even for whatever was done to us. We don’t have switches inside we can flip and just forget something that happens. Forgiveness costs because it is something we have to choose to do again and again and again. We cannot forget on demand.

God does not forgive on demand either; He forgives by choice and he can forget. He remembers our sin no more.

Rejoice!   Jeremiah 31:34
