1012) I did not enjoy math when I was a student. I didn’t understand many of the concepts, and I was an adult before I realized that in algebra, solving for “x” had to do with an unknown factor that was needed. For example, if I have 20 board feet of lumber and I know it takes 3 to make a small table, “x” tells me how many tables I can make. (This “algebra” is only meant for an example. Don’t go into the furniture business and use my formula for it–you’ll be out of business quickly.)
Paul knew the importance of math, but in another way. Romans 16:17 tells us Paul knew division could be devastating. In fact, he uses the word parakaleo, meaning “to beg” God’s children to watch out for those who divide others within the church. In fact, he admonishes us to “keep away from them.”
People who bring division among a group are dangerous to the principles the group holds. Their work can be so gradual, with an unloving comment here and a judgment there, the group may not notice the destruction they are producing.
Detecting and avoiding this kind of math is vital.
