“The” Versus “A”

939) If you ask for directions somewhere, my husband will give one set, and I will give another. Are one of these better than the other? Well, it depends on the person receiving the directions. In my husband’s mind, you travel north down so-and-so road 3 miles and then take a left, going west on so-and-so road. In my mind, you head out of the driveway and go left. You travel until you see the house on the right with a blue metal roof. Just beyond that, you’ll turn left at the post office. I know you might be chuckling while reading these because these differences of directions are a reality but that each one, if followed, can lead you to your destination. Because this is true, some people think all the tenants of every religion that exists gives us differing directions and that’s ok because they all lead to the same place. Not according to John 14:6.

In the fourteenth chapter of John, verse 6, Jesus specifically says that he is The way, The truth, and The life. No one comes to the father except through him. Looking closely, we see “The” and not “A”. The directions to God are very specific and there is no other way to him but through Jesus’ death, no matter how good or feasible the directions might seem.

Don’t be fooled. “The” isn’t the same as “A.”
