The Danger of Assuming Things About God

Chaplain Miller Speaks – The Bottle House – page 284

“It’s hard for me to understand why God thinks I’m important enough to die for. I certainly wouldn’t if I were God.”  (Debbie said)

“It’s funny that you used the phrase, ‘If I were God.’(Chaplain Miller answered) We often play god, even if subconsciously, when it comes to our day-to-day experiences.” He rose, offered Debbie some coffee—which she declined—refilled his mug, and sat back down at his desk.

“It’s easy to assume God thinks the same way we do. Because we feel unforgiving, then God must be unforgiving. We feel angry about certain things, then God must be angry about them too.

“Yes, now that I think about it, I have done that very thing.”

The chaplain set his mug on his desk and looked directly into Debbie’s eyes. “What is it that you’re assuming about God? What thing are you believing that, if you weighed it using Scripture, you’d find was incorrect?”
