906) Having been in education for over 35 years, I have seen and heard my share of motivational quotes. The administrators in education-land often dispense them to us to hopefully, I assume, encourage us to continue the hard work and stay in teaching. Many of these quotes get pushed aside because they are too general or “flowery”. There is one, however, that has stayed with me for years and that is: Children will not remember many of the things you taught them but they will remember if you cared about and loved them.

The event in Luke 7:1-10 reminds me of this quote. Here, we find a Roman centurion soldier who comes to Jesus because one of his servants was dying. He humbly asks Jesus to heal his servant, without even coming to his house, which is amazing, and Jesus did.

The act of asking Jesus to heal his servant isn’t what reminds me of the above quote. What caught my eye was in verse 2, which says, “There a centurion’s servant, whom his master valued highly, was sick and about to die.” The Roman soldier’s concern and care were not like many in his day. This centurion deeply cared about his servant and that servant lived out his days, remembering that he was important to at least two men.
