752) Those who are mature know that love is not solely a feeling. Yes, in the beginning, our senses overflow with euphoria but when it comes down to it, love is anything but. It is acceptance, hard work, giving, forgiving, being patient, kind and more.

Faith is similar because it is not built on a foundation of feelings. Again, at first, we might experience the feeling of wave upon wave of grace but, what about when our feelings change, as they often do in life? David illustrates the answer to this reality.

In Psalm 3, David begins by calling out to God in fear? Anxiety? Frustration? All of which manifest within our feelings. It’s interesting to also note that David does not belittle these feelings, and he honestly tells God about them. If we stop here, it will only give us a temporary feeling of comfort because we need to move to the next step.

Verse 3 shows us that David knew that, despite how he felt, his faith needed to be tapped in stating that God is his shield, his protector. That God sustains him, even when he doesn’t feel it.

Faith is not a feeling, it’s a knowing. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17). Building this sort of foundation beneath us will be crucial when the difficulties of this life come rushing into our hearts.
