Scheduling Kindness

711) The phrase, “random acts of kindness” is well known. These actions may be as small as opening the door for someone whose hands are full or paying for a stranger’s coffee. Kindness is always a wonderful thing but it also might be good to be reminded that these actions don’t solely need to be on the spur of the moment.

In 2 Samuel 9:1-13, David wants to make sure he shows kindness to anyone in Saul’s family in memory of his devoted friend, Jonathan. He first decides ahead of time who he will put kindness into action with. When he finds an opportunity, his actions are put into motion and he takes care of Mephibosheth, a servant in Saul’s household and a cripple. David knew that planning to be kind is important, and it blesses not only the receiver but also the one doling out kindness, too.
