670) When you trust someone, you have a calm within. This is because you know this person will keep his/her word; that they are dependable and they accept you for who you are–flaws included. When trust becomes difficult is when your circumstances put you in the center of chaos, exhaustion, doubt, and more. Trusting under these circumstances really is more about you than the object of your trust. You are scared. You are hurting. You are tired. These things make trusting difficult and, in these moments, it is hard to reflect on what you know about the object of your trust.
In Exodus 15:22-27, we see the Israelites in the Desert of Shur. They are hot, tired, cranky and afraid. At least they knew that they would have needed food and water when they were slaves, and now, they weren’t sure if their needs would be met. When the difficulties of life blind you to the history of faithfulness that God has had for you, it’s hard to trust Him. It becomes necessary to push aside these things and say, “I know what it feels like. I know what I see. I know that my body is crying out for what it needs. Yet, even now, I choose to trust.” It may be only the words you say to God, maybe with fear and confusion, and yet, this is the first act of trust. The other steps will follow.
Dare to trust; even when it’s difficult.
