Purpose Is Important

2065) There is always something to be gained from verses in the Bible; even familiar ones. One example is in the beloved words of the 23rd Psalm.

As we read through the poetic metaphors of the Psalm David wrote, we read about a comparison between God and a shepherd.

The second part of verse 4 tells us of the shepherd’s rod and staff. For years I assumed these tools were used to punish the sheep or, using the hook at the end of the staff, was for yanking the sheep in a different direction.

When I researched these tools, I found the rod was used like a blackjack of today. A shepherd would use the rod to beat off an enemy, such as wolves. All in protection of the sheep.

The staff was used to guide the sheep in a specific direction or away from danger.

Sometime the hook part of the staff was used gently under the sheep’s throat to guide one which didn’t respond to his direction.

There is much to be gained by doing a little research into the purpose of things mentioned in the Bible. What you discover is important.
