A Third Nature

2056) What are you good at? How long did it take to get to the higher level of this talent? Remember, even things we’re good at need to be nurtured.

When I was in school, I was very good at basketball. Yes, I had an athletic propensity, but I still had to work hour upon hour to get to the point where I was offered a college scholarship in the sport.

Things we repeat over and over become second nature but have you ever considered this is also true in things that are not productive for us?

Whenever I say something thoughtless. Whenever I make a bad choice. Whenever I get angry about something, I reinforce the idea that I am flawed, ignorant, an embarrassment and more.

Repeating this to myself for years has claimed these thoughts as truth within my soul. Am I doomed to these destructive thoughts? I don’t think so.

What has to happen is something that needs to be moved into the category I call third nature. I need to take God’s word and replace my negative thinking with his reality.

For example, Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us we are saved by grace. I need to write this verse on my soul, repeating it to myself whenever the old thinking pops up.

I am worthy because of grace. I am forgivable, because of grace. I am teachable, because of grace and so much more.

This “third nature” can become a habit if I practice it enough.
