Why He Came Pt. 1

1951) As my retirement draws closer, I often reflect on things that have happened within the four walls of my classroom. Many things are funny and some profound. I think today of a student I had many years ago.

I don’t remember the circumstances that brought up his statement, but he said, “I don’t believe in God and any of that nonsense.”

I smiled at him and said, “Well, you know, if my belief is wrong. I’ll just look ridiculous, but what if you’re wrong?” He sat there in thought for a moment and nodded.

This is one reason Jesus came to Earth. Luke 4:18 tells us he came here to proclaim good news to the poor. The Greek word used for poor here is ptóchos, which translates as to crouch or cower; to be destitute of spiritual truth.

We needed a savior who gives us what we need, spiritually and in all other ways.

I am no longer poor.
