1899) For better or for worse, I am often reflecting on whether I am progressing wholly into the person I want to become. I easily recognize the times when I act or react in ways I do not wish and, no matter how many things I do right in a day, the wrong, even if it’s one thing, screams out to me. I rarely see the progress I’m making toward my personal goals.
It’s easy to measure change in large chunks. Yes, I didn’t say the thing I really wanted to say in a heated moment. Or, yes, I have put down the guilt of something I had little control over. What I don’t often see is what Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 4:16.
Paul reminds us our physical bodies are moving toward decay, you know, from dust you came and dust you shall return? (Genesis 3:19). He goes on to say we are renewed within, day by day.
I see this renewal as tiny, gradual changes each day that lead to becoming more like the one I was meant to be. These changes can be so small, they may not be noticed, but small things add up to big things.
Perhaps it’s time to recognize that measuring change within is very difficult. We need to trust God is helping us be a better person, especially in small steps.
