1897) Anyone who has given to someone something that cannot be reciprocated knows the content of Acts 20:35. Here we are told we will receive a better blessing by giving than in receiving.
Because of this, Matthew 6:1is important. Here, Jesus tells us that gifts given for the dual purpose of benefiting others and making ourselves look good will receive a smaller reward. The recognition (or the feeling) received in the moment is it. That is the reward, which can be pretty good, but ends with that feeling.
By giving discretely, the reward is far greater. Jesus tells us our father in heaven will reward us. This honor renews the spirit and will be saved for the ultimate recognition in heaven.
The ability to choose a greater reward later over the smaller reward now is worth it, but not always easy.
