1824) When I was in college, I had a Japanese girl who was my roommate. Because she grew up in a different culture, I had a lot of questions for her.
One was about how she learned to speak English. Her answer surprised me. She said she took around 10 years of English in school but bemoaned the fact they only taught her how to read and write it, but not how to pronounce anything.
My roommate knew how to read and write English maybe even better than I did, but knowing isn’t enough. In fact, it can be a hindrance. She found conversing in English very difficult.
Acts 4:1-2 tells us the Sadducees, a Jewish religious group, who were well-versed in the Scriptures, were angry that the Apostles were proclaiming Jesus’ resurrection. These men didn’t believe in the resurrection of anyone past, present, nor the future and they certainly didn’t believe in Jesus’. Because of this, they had no full understanding of the grace and forgiveness Jesus’ resurrection offers.
Sometimes knowing too much makes one vulnerable to missing the greater picture of what God has revealed and what he has done.
