No Exemption

1812) When I was young, there was a toy called Weebles. They were an egg-shaped toy whose jingle was Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down. You could place them on the floor, hold one end down, and when you let go, they always popped right back up.

This toy comes to mind when I read Proverbs 24:16. Here we are told the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity. (ESV) The Hebrew word for fall is naphal which can translate to experiencing calamity.

The hard news about this verse is the righteous will fall. The good news is, because we rely on one who never falls, we can get back up.

We’re not exempted from difficulties, but we have someone who will pick us back up.
