1783) I live on coastal Maine, almost to the border of Canada. A friend of mine and I recently took a trip across the border and when we went, we had to have one of a limited list of things to prove our identities. A passport is what the border patrol wants to see but my friend had forgotten hers.
As I pulled up to the agent, I gave him my passport and my friend gave him her enhanced driver’s license. He looked at us and told her she really needed her passport but, he continued, Since you both don’t look like serial killers, I’ll let you into Canada this time. My friend and I looked at each other and laughed.
Later, I was thinking about our adventure and thought how important knowing someone’s identity is, especially spiritually. If someone were to ask me what Jesus’ identity is, what would I say?
Jesus is:
The Bread of Life – John 6:35
The Light of the World – John 8:12
The Door – John 10:9
The Good Shepherd – John 10: 11 and 14
The Resurrection and the Life – John 11:25
The Way, the Truth and the Life – John 14:6
The Vine – John 15:1, 5
Each of these elements of Jesus’ identity would be beneficial for us to study. Knowing the identity of the one we place our faith in is vital.
