1767) I am not just a word enthusiast; I love to find out the origins of the terms we use. For example, “the bottom line” originated in 1832. It was used in accounting, so a business or person knew how much money they had after all debits and credits were added or subtracted.
1 Corinthians 13:1-3 gives us a bottom line. Here, Paul tells us it doesn’t matter how well we speak or sing, if we don’t have love, it will only be a loud racket.
Bottom line: It doesn’t matter if we can utter prophecy accurately, have an understanding of much and faith enough to move mountains, if we don’t love, we have nothing of importance.
Bottom line: If we give all we own away, and even make physical sacrifices, if we don’t love, we haven’t gained anything.
Bottom line: Love is the all-important ingredient that reflects our relationship with God. Because God is love, we should be reflecting our savior. 1 John 4:16.
