Rubber Bands and Butterflies

1714) A few years ago, I stumbled across a place that was selling butterflies that could fly with a rubber band propulsion. I pictured the faces of my young scholars if I put a wound up one in each of their laptops, so when they opened them, the butterflies would fly out.

I got them and wound up each one and placed them. The next day, when the kids opened their laptops, there were sounds of utter delight. I still smile today.

This memory came to mind when I read 1 Peter 4:8. In this verse, Peter tells us to love each other earnestly. The Greek word for earnestly is ektenés which translates to completely stretched out, like a rubber band pulled tightly. This stretching is a call-to-action sort-of-speak because tension produces action.

The question now becomes, what types of action will your tension produce?
