Is God Safe?

1659) One of the deepest needs I have is to feel safe. Notice I said “feel” safe. I was particular with my words here because I know there are many things that give me the feeling of safety when circumstances really aren’t. For example, every night we lock our doors. This makes me feel safe but, in reality, if someone wanted to break in, they could do it.

Because of my need for safety and realizing many things really aren’t, I struggle with verses such as Proverbs 18:10. It tells us the “name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” My struggle is knowing that bad and even evil things happen to us on this earth, therefore, it seems this verse contradicts it.

Honestly, I don’t have a clear answer to this theological and realistic struggle but I read something by C.S. Lewis which really helped. When I was reading the book The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my young scholars, I read how the children Susan and Lucy ask Mr. Beaver if Aslan (he represents Jesus in the book) is safe. He replies, “…he isn’t safe. But he’s good.”

Perhaps you needed to be comforted today, as I often am, in realizing that even though horrible things happen to us, God is working circumstances so it will be for our good, in spite of how unsafe (or out of control) it feels.

No, God is not “safe” – but he’s good!
