Dignity and Respect

1657) Throughout the years, many have stated their current generation lacks dignity and respect. The 60s and 70s, for example, had continual strife. Watching news clips from these years seems to parallel the societal behavior of many today.

When I observe these things, I sometimes sit back and wonder where dignity and respect have gone. Yes, we could blame so many things that have contributed to this but, ultimately, these are choices we make.

Why is dignity and respect important? It’s simply because God has made mankind in his image. Genesis 1:27. Everyone, even our enemies, has a part of God within them. This reflects what Jesus said in Matthew 25:40. Here he says how we treat the hungry, thirsty (both physically and spiritually) and the sick and the prisoner is how we are treating Jesus.

Does treating others with dignity and respect mean we embrace the bad choices they make? No. You can disagree with others in a dignified and respectful way. Besides, I don’t know many people who have been persuaded to adopt an opposing view by forcefully demanding they embrace your way (or God’s way) of looking at things.

Treating others with dignity and respect is becoming less common, so it’s important to demonstrate this to others.
