1603) I have been stunned by beauty a few times in my life. One was when I watched the movie Schindler’s List, directed and produced by Steven Spielberg. (Be aware, the movie earned its R rating.) In this movie, based upon a real man, Oscar Schindler hires Jews during WWII to earn money for him by making munitions needed by the Nazis. As time passed, Oscar realized what Hitler was doing to the Jews, and he began buying from a concentration camp commander the people who worked for him. When the war was over, Oscar was fleeing his business because he sold war supplies to the Nazis and, therefore, was a war criminal. The Jews he saved gathered in gratitude to see him off. In this moment in the film, Oscar breaks down, realizing he could have sold this, this and this to buy and save more Jews, but he didn’t. As I sat watching this with tears running down my face, I thought, what will I regret not doing in my life?
Galatians 6:9 tells us not to grow weary of doing good. This word weary in the Greek means our actions should not be negatively influenced by the struggles in our hearts. This doing good is translated into beautiful, and this will provide us a harvest of beauty.
I have often thought if Steven Spielberg never produced and directed any other films; he has done something beautiful and inspiring in the shadow of pure evil.
Dare to make the time to give others what is beautiful. It will change our outlook on the difficulties we face within.
