1583) One thing I struggle with is feeling safe. There are many reasons for this but in one sense, it doesn’t matter. The bottom line is, I do.
As I’ve aged, I’ve realized there is safety and there is a perception of safety. Having a locked door, a can of mace, etc, gives me a perception of safety. We all know if someone wants to break into your house in the middle of the night, it really doesn’t matter how many locks you have on the doors. So, the perception of being safe really doesn’t help much.
There is another type of safety and we find it in Psalm 4:8. In this verse, David tells us he can lie down and sleep without fear because he knows the Lord keeps him in safety.
What I think is interesting about this verse is that it’s coming from a man who often had enemies hunting him down. He was also a man of war and that, too, would lend to an unsafe lifestyle. So, what is the mindset that David used in order to write this verse? I think it all relies on trust.
David trusted God would protect him as long as he had things to do on this earth. No other man or army could take him out unless God wanted David to come home with him permanently in heaven. This was true for David and it’s true for us.
Yes, it’s true. There are bad people who do bad things to us. We can focus on why God allows some of these things and, frankly, I don’t know why he does and won’t this side of heaven. But I can trust that there are a bunch of bad things that were in line to come my way that God did not allow.
To accept this point of view, you need to use your faith. This can provide us safety if we let it. Easier said than done!
