The Domino Effect

1472) It amazes me when I see a video of someone who has set up hundreds of dominos, so with one gentle push, the whole “chain” of the tiles will fall over, one after another. There’s a lot we can learn from watching this chain reaction and one lesson reminds me of Jonah, chapter 1.

In this chapter, God tells Jonah to go to Nineveh and tell them that judgment is on the way, but, for many reasons, Jonah sets his dominos up in a chain going in the opposite direction.

As many of you know, Jonah boarded a boat, and God sent a severe storm. The men on the ship, who were used to harsh weather, felt terrified and thought they might die. Surprisingly, Jonah had taken a break from adding to his domino chain and took a nap. The sailors quickly wake him up. Jonah reveals he is the culprit, the one who not only set his domino chain up in the wrong direction, it was also near the sailors’ chains, and when circumstances pushed his over, the chain reactions hurt multiple people.

It’s always a good thing to keep in mind that whatever we do, good or bad, our dominos cross paths with others’ and when ours topple over, it can often topple over others’. Perhaps we ought to place a domino somewhere in plain view, reminding us of this truth.
