1459) When I attempt to communicate a specific concept and I struggle to do so, I might go in the opposite direction and describe what it is not. For example, if I’m trying to describe mercy, I can choose to tell what mercy is not.
There are some very familiar verses about the tongue in James 3 that are powerful. In verse 6, for example, James tells us that the tongue is like a fire when used for wickedness, but how about considering the opposite? If our tongues can be a burning flame of fire, can’t we also use this powerful tool for extreme good?
We can use our words to bring healing, peace, and grace. We can use our tongues to urge on a good cause and to lead others towards God’s best plan for their lives.
Thinking of the opposite direction can sometimes be helpful.
