1455) I hate it when people quote things and attribute them to the Bible when they are not. For example, God works in mysterious ways. William Cowper wrote this in 1773. Another one is, God helps those who help themselves. This is also not a quote from the Bible and often, the Bible teaches the opposite. God helps those who need and ask for it. Matthew 11:30, for example. It is possible, however, to find an aspect of this second quote in the Bible. It’s found in Acts 14:8-10.
In these verses, Paul was preaching and, in the crowd, there was a man with crippled feet. Paul sees this and shouts to him, “Stand up!” The next sentence is what’s drawn my attention. It tells us the man jumped up and walked.
Where God helps those who help themselves comes to mind here is if all that happened was Paul telling the man to stand up, there probably would have been no miracle. The man had to make the choice to stand up, by faith.
There are all kinds of gifts and help God is longing to provide to us if we’ll only help ourselves, by faith. Dare to stand up when God offers healing.
