1453) As most of you know, I have a dachshund (and have had several in my adult life) and he is, to me, God’s demonstration of unconditional love and devotion, even when I don’t deserve it. Because of this, love for my little man is woven throughout my heart and when this bundle of love gets sick or has to be put to sleep, I feel as if my heart has been ripped out of my body.
There have been times when I knew my dogs were coming to the end of their lives. I’d beg God to just let them fall asleep and pass on, but God did not choose to answer in that way. Because of this, I have wondered if God truly cares about my animals. Psalm 36:6 tells me he does.
In this Psalm, God tells us his love is as high as the heavens (vs. 5). His love is also unfailing (vs. 7). God lets us drink from his river of delights (vs 8). It’s obvious God loves us and because of this, verse 6 sticks out to me. This verse tells of God’s righteousness and justice and that he cares deeply about people and animals. God cares about animals!
My theology doesn’t prioritize the animal kingdom over people, who were created in God’s image. Instead, I see this as God loving us and the animals we care about. I also understand this to mean that God is concerned with the animal kingdom. This is also a way to communicate another facet of God’s love and for those of us who love animals so much, it is touching to be reminded of this.
God loves my dog and God loves me. Beautiful!
