1441) In Christian circles, it’s easy to label someone selfish if they keep specific boundaries blocking out others who are toxic. Making the choice to act in your best interest isn’t always selfish. I understand this, but I often feel if I ask God for things, even for my own comfort, it’s not okay. But, in my years of studying and teaching the Bible, I have not found a verse that says it’s selfish to ask God for anything.
We see an example of this asking in Luke 22:42. Here, Jesus is pleading with God to take this cup of suffering away. Jesus was in pain and he knew of the agony that was to come. Jesus also knew something else and he included it in his prayer: Not my will be done but yours.
In studying Jesus’ example, we can come to God and ask him for anything, but we need to accept his answer by faith, whether it’s yes, no or wait, knowing God will give us what is best.
Whether God answers our prayers in the way we want or not, it’s a relief to know we can come to him with our burdens and he will always listen.
