1184) I am a rule follower (in the sense of the general rules of any “game,” job, etc.) You just tell me what I need to do, and I will continually work at doing it.
The problem with being this sort of rule follower is it can give a sense of self-righteousness. I can sit back and say, Well, I’ve done my best to follow all rules. I’m pretty good. This attitude is not really following rules; it’s an illusion.
God has given us a list of rules. The 10 Commandments, for example. In Micah 6:8, we are also given three more: act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God.
These rules may seem simple, but they are not.
- Act justly (as God sees justice; not your idea of it)
- Love mercy (not treating others as they deserve when they have wronged you); and
- Walk humbly (I am a sinner, saved by grace) with God.
Act, love and walk. They are rules given to us and, thank God, his mercy and justice toward us is not based upon whether we deserve it or not. Micah 6:8
