Word Power

1150) As a writer, I spend hours poring over the words I have typed on my computer screen. I will adjust sentence structure, make sure what I wrote makes sense and examine my word choices. If only I would spend the same amount of time working over the words I speak before I say them!

As I studied today’s verse, it’s interesting that James points out the negative aspects of our words rather than the positive ones. Is this because he believed we can’t use our words for good purposes? I don’t think so.

I believe James spoke in the negative about what we say because he knew what most of us know, deep inside; it’s easier to use our words to tear down rather than build up.

Besides tearing down, it takes so many more positive words to “make up” for the negative ones.

The saying of ‘sticks and stones’ not hurting is preposterous. Our words can crush spirits. Wouldn’t it be better to use words that build others up in the first place?

What type of words will you use today?  James 3:8
