1006) Frustrations come often because we expect one thing and got something else. For example, if I do something special for my husband, I often expect that he notices and comments on it. When this doesn’t happen, I get grouchy because I expected one thing and did not get it.
Romans 12:9-21 gives us many expectations God has for us. Paul states quite a list. Verse 9 – Sincerely love; hate evil. Verse 10 – Be devoted and honor others. Verse 11 – don’t lack in spiritual zeal. Verse 12 – be joyful, patient and faithful. Verse 13 – Share. Verse 14- bless someone who persecutes you. Verse 15- Rejoice and mourn with others. Verse 16- Live in harmony and be humble. Verse 17 – Don’t get revenge. Verse 18 – Live at peace with others. Verse 19 – Let God get even. Verse 20 – be kind to an enemy. Verse 21 – Overcome evil with good.
If I were to read this and make a self-evaluation, I would be very discouraged. Fortunately, our salvation does not depend on how well we do these things. These are goals – things that we need to strive for. Remember, Paul says in Hebrews 12:1 that we are to run the race – he doesn’t say anything about winning it. Why? Because in this life, this is an unrealistic expectation.
Do not allow Satan to “shoot you down” by placing an expectation upon yourself that God knows you cannot keep. Remember, we are covered by the blood of grace.
