967) When you are a child, you get told what to do. It’s expected that when adults issue rules, children should obey, but what about things that are not rule-oriented? Opinions? Advice? What about these?
I have heard several adults lament it didn’t occur to them until well into their 30s and 40s that their parents could have been wrong about some of these things. Because of this, these individuals have gotten into a habit of checking other’s sources and not just buying in to anything someone says because they are gregarious or outwardly kind.
In Acts 17:11-12, we read of people who listen to Paul’s and Silas’ words, but then they examine the Scriptures themselves to see how what they are hearing lines up with what God says. This is a good and necessary thing. If members of the People’s Temple had done that, perhaps that and many other tragic things could have been avoided.
It is prudent to look for yourself. Ask the questions, look at what the Bible says. Jesus called himself the Truth, so examining him and the Bible will reveal much.
