943) What is truth? The word truth is from the middle English word treuthe which means to see true. If you look up the word on dictionary.com, you find among its definition, “The true or actual state of a matter. A verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle or the like.” These definitions seem to be accurate, but we are living in a time when everything is disputable; that truth changes “form” (for lack of a better word) from one person to another and if you insist that something is true, there are always crowds that are ready to swoop in and disqualify it.
Regardless of how humans define truth, it exists. Jesus said he is the embodiment of truth (John 14:6) and if we are God’s children, then we accept this statement by faith.
In John 20, there is a record of an event that humans have a hard time wrapping their minds around. This chapter reveals the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. So, as a Christian, we must just sit back and cross our arms and say, “Well, God said it, so it must be true.” Yes, this statement takes faith, but there are evidences of the truth here in this chapter that some may have overlooked concerning Jesus’ resurrection.
First, in verses 4-7, Peter and John look into the tomb and the strips of linen that were historically wrapped around Jesus, mummy-style, were still intact but empty of a body. This includes the headcloth, too. If the disciples (or any other follower of Jesus) were trying to make it appear that he resurrected, if they removed his body, the linen would be unraveled and, in a pile,–if left there at all. Amazing!
Another piece of evidence of Jesus’ resurrection as described in all four Gospels is that if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, where is his body? The enemies of Jesus would quickly produce Jesus’ body to stop the news of his resurrection. Instead, no one ever does.
Evaluate the evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. The truth is: Jesus rose from the dead. Is this disputable; changeable from one person’s perception to another? Look at the evidence of the empty tomb.
