The Value of Sparrows

Pages 260-261 – The Bottle House

“Stacy, I’m holding one of God’s promises right here. Do you know what kind of feather this is?”

“No, I don’t know much about birds at all.”

“This is a feather from a sparrow—the most common bird in the world. They’re everywhere, nesting in top windows of our cities’ tallest skyscrapers, and they have even been found in some underground caves, probably flying in by mistake.”

Stacy stared at the feather while listening.

“Because these birds are so common, people have a tendency to not value them—you know, the economics of supply and demand. In light of that, I think it’s interesting Jesus himself speaks about them. In Matthew 10:29, he says God is aware of each sparrow that may fall to the ground.” Chaplain Miller paused and studied the feather again, then placed it on the patio table. “Jesus says next that God even knows the number of hairs on our heads and even though he cares about sparrows, he values people all the more.”
