The Depth of Gratitude

907) We are living in a culture who preaches there is a  great need for self-care. To a certain extent, I agree. Though no one ever stated it as I was growing up, I got the idea that to take care of yourself is sinful. That may be true sometimes, but at others, it is not. It takes humility to take care of yourself. Why? Because when you do, you are admitting your limitations and the need to rejuvenate. This, of course, can be a slippery slope because it’s really easy to go overboard in self-care and wind up being selfish.

In Luke 7, Jesus is speaking about John the Baptist. He attributes to John a humility that many do not display. We know that John 3:30 says that John said about Jesus, “He must become greater; I must become less.” In verse 28 of Luke 7, Jesus speaks of the greatness of John’s purpose, but then he adds something else of interest. Jesus says, “yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than (John).”  Greater? What makes someone “great” in God’s eyes? From this chapter of Luke, we see that one thing is humility.

A humility that understands a person’s limits but also understands the need to rejuvenate. That is one aspect of humility.
