The Trouble with Mary

897) Human beings are truly one of God’s most amazing creations. If you studied our brains alone, there would be no doubt that the mark of our Creator is there. The things our brains do are marvelous. I only wish I understood this organ better.

One such amazing person is the Virgin Mary. Here was a young, engaged woman, anticipating her marriage in the months to come and then, one night, an angel visits her. The first thing the angel said to her was, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.” We read of Mary’s reaction in verse 29. It says that “Mary was greatly troubled by his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.” So, Mary was greatly troubled because the angel called her “highly favored?”

What is also interesting is when Gabriel preceded to tell her she would get pregnant, as a virgin, by God’s power and these verses do not say that Mary was troubled over these words! If it were me, these words would trouble me terribly. Instead, verse 38 says that Mary humbly accepted God’s news, saying, “I am the Lord’s servant…. May your word to me be fulfilled.”

May we have the humility that Mary had and the heart she left open to what God had for her. Our world would be a much better place if we did. Luke 1:26-38.
