I Believe; Help My Unbelief

880) I have read Mark 9:24 many times and as I look at it, it seems it contradicts itself. First, I read- “I believe,” it is a statement of faith. But when I read, “help my unbelief,” that’s where it gets confusing.

In thinking about this verse, I wonder if it’s easier to think of this substituting the subject of love. I love, help my unlovingness. I can love someone–just like I can believe in someone, but still need help in being loving, I still need help in keeping my words and actions in line with what I say I believe. This makes this verse a little easier to wrap my head around.

One last point, believing in something is not the same as being committed to something. Satan believes in God but is not committed to Him. Food for thought.
