713) Several years ago, I had a severe case of the shingles. The heated sores covered the right side of my face from my cheekbone up. These blisters were even on the inside of my eyelid. Because of this, I had to see multiple eye doctors because the possibility of losing the sight in that one eye was huge. Fortunately, I did not.
There are several diseases and other causes that can jeopardize your vision, but how much consideration is given to faulty eyesight spiritually?
In 2 Samuel 12:1-7, we see David had faulty vision spiritually. He had just committed adultery with Bathsheba, lied, schemed and murdered her husband. When he is confronted by God through Nathan, David is told a story of someone who did these things in another context. This quickly reveals that David’s vision is impaired spiritually. He heatedly says that this man should be put to death. Nathan then speaks words that I know David must have remembered the rest of his life. “You are the man!” It’s easy to see the speck of sawdust in someone else’s eyes than the plank in our own (Matthew 7:5), but we are still responsible for our actions or inactions. Perhaps we should enlist the help of others who follow God so that the plank we don’t notice doesn’t blind us to what we need to repent from.
