651) In Genesis 12:10-20, we see a side of Abram that is not revealed earlier. In the chapter, he and his family travel to Egypt because of a famine and therefore, he decides that because he had a beautiful wife, then his life was in danger there. In his irrational fear, and I use the word irrational because God had already promised him and his family Canaan, he pressures his wife, Sarai to claim Abram was her brother because he feared for his life. This lie allows the Pharaoh to take Sarai and make her a “wife” and all this implies. I have wondered how Sarai felt about this. Because her husband feared for his life, she is “left” with the Pharaoh. Fortunately for Sarai, God intervened and Sarai is given back to Abram leaving Pharaoh bitter in all of this. He banishes Abram from the land. Fear is a powerful thing and can make it easier for poor choices to be made. This reaction to the circumstances of everyday life is not from God because 1 John 4:18 reminds us that “perfect love (the love God gives us) casts away all fear.” Love trumps fear; rest in God’s love.
