641) I did not start out as an English teacher; I have learned a lot of grammar rules as I have taught. One of these many lessons involves the semi-colon. They are an underused punctuation in my opinion. You use semi-colons when you have two independent clauses that are virtually cause and effect. For example, I am tired tonight; I will not go to the game. Why do I not go to the game? Because I’m tired. Hebrews 13:6 includes a quote from the Psalms and this quote uses a semi-colon. “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” Why will I not be afraid? Because the Lord is my helper. Focusing on why I shouldn’t be afraid, God will help me, reminds me that I am not alone. Though circumstances in this life can be difficult, I am not alone and help is available. A semi-colon is important.
